Band is open to 4th and 5th grade students.


Students are asked to set a goal of:
1. Practicing A MINIMUM OF 1 hour/week (better if you can practice more!)
2. Passing 1-2 achievement pieces/week
3. Remaining in band for the entire school year.

How Do We Sign Up?
Students and parents must attend one of the Mandatory Parent/Student Meetings to receive an application. You will also find out more information regarding instruments, time commitment, etc. See IMPORTANT DATES section for specific information about this year's start dates/times.

Parents must attend one of these meetings… there is A LOT of information. Both meetings will contain the same information. Come to whichever location is more convenient. If you can’t make it, you MUST make an appointment with me before your child can be in band or there will not be an instrument for them. INSTRUMENT SELECTION FAIR:
Important for students wanting to be in Beginning Band and learn a new instrument.
Tuesday, 9/5 from 6:00-7:30 in the Santa Cruz High School Cafeteria

BEGINNING BAND MANDATORY INFORMATIONAL MEETING:

Wednesday, 9/6 at 6:00pm in the Bay View Cafeteria
Tuesday, 9/12 at 6:00pm in the Westlake Cafeteria

BEGINNING BAND:
Bay View: Mondays 3-4pm in Music Room 23, begins 9/27 (Wednesday ALL-Band)
Westlake: Thursdays 3:15-4:15pm in Music Room 27, begins 9/20 (Wednesday ALL-Band)

INTERMEDIATE BAND:
Bay View: Tuesdays from 3:00-4:00pm, begins 9/19
Westlake: Fridays from 3:15-4:15pm, begins 9/15

ALL BAND WEDNESDAYS:
On these days, both Beginning and Intermediate Band students will meet. This will give us opportunities to learn pieces together for the District Concert as well as provide support for Beginners with Intermediate student help. It is REQUIRED for students to attend these Wednesday rehearsals. If you have a conflict, please talk with me. Bay View and Westlake Bands work together and play together at concerts. Students are encouraged to attend rehearsals at both schools, especially when a lesson is missed and for extra support.
Bay View Wednesdays:9/27, 10/25, 11/29, 12/13, 1/24, 2/21, 3/21, 4/25, 5/23 from 1-2pm
Westlake Wednesdays:9/20, 10/18, 11/15, 12/20, 1/31, 2/28, 3/28, 4/18, 5/16 from 12:45-1:45pm

REQUIRED BAND CONCERT DATES:
Downtown Holiday Parade: December 2 (Int. Band required, Beg. Band voluntary)
Young Ensemble Showcase: February 10 at Santa Cruz High School
All Band Concert: TBA
Mandatory Rehearsal: TBA

PRACTICE DIRECTIONS:
(click on Band Book Recordings and do each step with the recording):
1. Clap the rhythm
2. Point and sing the note names
3. Finger and sing the note names
4. Play slowly at first, speed up later


BAND ACHIEVEMENT REWARD LEVELS:
For each level reached on Smart Music, I will send a postcard home and give your child an award certificate in class. After finishing the book, your child will also receive a medal at the Spring Concert! Print the chart here:
